Photo Release: Coast Guard posthumously recognizes Alaskan hero

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Capt. Jason Fosdick, Coast Guard Sector Anchorage commander, presents the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award to Marina Haynes, Machelle Haynes and Mary McDaniel in recognition of their mother, Betty Haynes’ role in a 1950 rescue Dec. 15, 2011.

Haynes received the award posthumously for her role in saving Christensen Wetche, the only survivor of the fishing vessel Dixie, which sank in the waters near Pelican during a fall storm.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sisters Marina Haynes, Machelle Haynes and Mary McDaniel read over the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award, which was posthumously presented to their mother Betty Haynes (formerly Monk) for her part in 1950 rescue Dec. 15, 2011.

Haynes and two of her cousins used their 32-foot fishing vessel to search for and ultimately save Christensen Wetche who was the only survivor of the fishing vessel Dixie’s crew.
