COAST GUARD, ALASKA STATE TROOPERS SEARCH FOR MISSING COUPLE
NO PHOTOS OR VIDEO AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME


KODIAK, Alaska - The Coast Guard and Alaska State Troopers continue searching near Hawkins Island west of Cordova for two people missing since March 23.

The two persons were reported over due by a family member Thursday when their skiff was located capsized in Orca Bay.

The Alaska State Troopers had ground parties on scene searching for the two missing people. After prolonged searching the Alaska State Troopers requested Coast Guard helicopter assistance with the search.

Air Station Kodiak launched a rescue helicopter at 7:15 a.m. and proceeded to the search area, consisting of Orca Inlet and Hawkins Island Cutoff. The helicopter crew also performed two shoreline searches of Henchinbrook Island, searching a total of 435 square miles.

Family members of the missing persons located two piles of debris in a Canoe Passage on Hawkins Island. The debris contained personal flotation devices, safety equipment and other items belonging to the missing vessel.

The Alaska State Troopers plan on searching two miles above and below the located debris tomorrow morning. Results from the Alaska State Troopers search will determine future Coast Guard actions.
