COAST GUARD TO VISIT HAINES IN MAY

FISHING VESSEL AND UNINSPECTED PASSENGER VESSEL EXAMS AVAILABLE

JUNEAU, Alaska - A team of Coast Guard marine inspectors will be in Haines, Alaska on May 5, 6 and 7 of this year.  The team's primary mission will be to conduct federally-mandated inspections of commercial vessels certified to carry more than six passengers for hire.  The team will also be available to conduct courtesy safety exams for commercial fishing vessels and Uninspected Passenger Vessels (UPVs), commonly known as "six-packs," which carry six or fewer passengers for hire.  Commercial fishermen and UPV operators whose boats pass the voluntary safety exams will be less likely to face Coast Guard boardings at sea.

Fishermen and UPV operators who wish to schedule safety exams in Haines on May 5, 6 or 7 should call Bert Sazon.  He can be reached at (907) 463-2460 prior to May 2, 2008 and at (907) 957-0151 between May 3, 2008 and May 7, 2008.  Advanced scheduling is recommended.
