ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Capt. John S. Kenyon, commander Sector Anchorage, presented a Meritorious Service Award to Capt. Sam Daniels and the crew of the Alaska Marine Highway System Ferry Chenega in Whittier Monday for their efforts assisting and saving eight lives since September 2007.

"The quick actions of the captain and crew are commendable and without a doubt prevented a tragic outcome," said Capt. John S. Kenyon, commander Sector Anchorage.

Capt. Sam Daniels and his crew used the Chenega's rescue boat to save three people including an 8 year-old child from the water in Passage Canal after rough seas capsized their 22-foot pleasure craft Wildfire June 8, 2008.

The crew assisted a stranded mariner on the North End of Lone Island Sept. 30, 2007.

Upon receiving the man's distress call, the Chenega crew altered course, launched their rescue boat and recovered the stranded man. He was transferred to another good Samaritan vessel that transported him to Whittier.

Sept. 2, 2008, the Chenega's crew rescued one kayaker from the water and rendered assistance to three others following a distress call. The kayakers were delivered safely to Whittier.

Guy Beedle, a crewman aboard the Chenega and pictured above with Dainels, was the coxswain of the Chenega's rescue boat for two of the three cases.

"I completely trust Guy and his swift actions and expertise lead to safe rescue of those people," said Daniels.

These are common examples of boating accidents in Alaska. The Coast Guard reminds mariners to wear their lifejackets, carry a radio and signaling device while on the water.

May 16 through 22 is National Safe Boating Week. Recreational boaters can schedule a free vessel safety check of all the required safety equipment with their local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla.
