Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers increase boating awareness in Haines, Petersburg through Memorial Day weekend

JUNEAU, Alaska -  The Coast Guard along with Alaska State Troopers will be conducting boating education safety training in an effort to better educate mariners about boating regulations through public outreach efforts and increased enforcement on the water during Memorial Day weekend.

Spring and Summer prompts heavy recreational boating activity that has historically produced serious boating accidents.  With the large number of boating accidents in the past, the Coast Guard has found it necessary to increase its presence in the small and more remote communities of Southeast Alaska.

The Coast Guard's presence will include educating the boating public on boating safety regulations as well as enforcing all applicable laws and regulations when necessary.

When not underway, the boating education safety training teams will focus their efforts at ramp facilities while boaters are launching and recovering boats.  This gives the boat operators the opportunity to correct unsafe situations before they get underway.
