Coast Guard locates Ketchikan residents, child 30 miles northeast of Ketchikan
KODIAK, Alaska - Two adults and a 12-year old child from a 16-foot skiff were located on the beach in eastern Behm Canal 30 miles northeast of Ketchikan Monday morning by an Air Station Sitka crew aboard a MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter. Klyn Kloxin, 50, and Tracy Harrel, 46, both Ketchikan residents, and the child, a Lewiston, Idaho, resident, were located in good condition. They had pulled their skiff onto the beach and started a fire using a flare. The rescue helicopter crew landed on the beach, embarked the three people and delivered them safely to emergency medical services in Ketchikan. Their skiff will be towed back to Ketchikan by the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squadron. Rescuers searched 811 miles of shore and sea over three days. Kloxin, Harrel and the child were reported overdue to the Coast Guard Sector Juneau Command Center at 9:30 p.m. Saturday by concerned family members. They reported that the three people departed Ketchikan at 8 a.m. Saturday to fish for halibut in the vicinity of Bold Island and Twin Islands and were expected to return Saturday at dark. The skiff was sighted Saturday by witnesses heading toward Behm Canal. Crews aboard a 47-foot motor life boat and a 25-foot rescue boat from Station Ketchikan along with a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka searched in the vicinity of Behm Canal, Reveillagigedo Channel, Thorne Arm, Annette Island and the surrounding areas. The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squadron, good Samaritan vessels and local family members assisted in the search. Monday’s weather is reportedly rain, a high air temperature of 60 degrees, a water temperature of 56 degrees and a southeast wind of 10 mph gusting to 20 mph.
