Coast Guard outreach team exposes North Slope youth to Coast Guard missions and operations

NOME, Alaska – Petty Officer 2nd Class Cody Lathrop with the Coast Guard Cutter Mustang homeported in Seward, Alaska, assists a Nome high school student with donning law enforcement gear during the Alaskan Native Outreach Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Nome Beltz Junior and Senior High School.  Lathrop spoke about his role in Coast Guard law enforcement and his job as a machinery technician to youth in Nome, Kotzebue and Barrow public schools during the three-day outreach from Sept. 23-25. NOME, Alaska – Chief Luis Nieves with Sector Anchorage shows a Nome high school student the proper way to carry a weapon during the Alaskan Native Outreach Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at Nome Beltz Junior and Senior High School.  Nieves is a Coast Guard reservist and works with the Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue.  He answered law enforcement questions and demonstrated the Coast Guard’s weapons and law enforcement gear to youth during the three-day outreach in Nome, Kotzebue and Barrow from Sept. 23-25. KOTZEBUE, Alaska – Master Chief Jeremiah Roberts with the Seventeenth District Command Center in Juneau shows a middle school student how to plot on a navigational chart during the Alaskan Native Outreach, Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009 at Kotzebue Public School.  Roberts spoke about the operations specialist rate and his experiences in the Coast Guard.  The outreach lasted three days traveling to Nome, Kotzebue and Barrow to expose and educate North Slope youth about Coast Guard missions and operations from Sept. 23-25. The program focuses on the importance of wearing life jackets.   Nelson spoke about her experiences and traveling opportunities since she has been in the Coast Guard.
