Coast Guard ends 2009 Arctic Domain Awareness flights

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The crew of a HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Kodiak performs the last arctic domain awareness flight of the year, Nov. 23, 2009. Monday’s flight surveyed the Alaskan coastline and observed Kivalina, Red Dog Mine, Barrow, and Prudhoe Bay, also included is a brief statement by Rear Admiral Christopher Colvin Commander 17th Coast Guard District. ANCHORAGE, Alaska– The crew of an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Kodiak flew its last scheduled Arctic Domain Awarenes flight over the Arctic region of Alaska Nov. 23, 2009.  Monday’s flight surveyed the Alaskan coastline and observed Kivalina, Red Dog Mine, Barrow and Prudhoe Bay.  Also included is a brief statement by Rear Adm. Christopher Colvin , commander of the 17th Coast Guard District.

The Arctic Domain Awareness flights provide the Coast Guard a better understanding of the Arctic by testing personnel and equipment capabilities, identifying challenges, surveying sea ice and monitoring vessel traffic.  The flights provide visibility on seasonal mining operations and coastal erosion while supporting the Coast Guard’s Homeland Security mission, maritime domain awareness and science research.
