Morgenthau patrols icy Bering Sea

JUNEAU, Alaska - Crewmembers stand on the bow of the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau, a 378-foot high-endurance cutter homeported in Alameda, Calif., as it maneuvers in Womens Bay near Kodiak during its recent patrol in Alaska waters this month.

The Morgnethau departed its Alameda for a two month patrol in the Bering Sea Monday, Nov. 30, 2009.

JUNEAU, Alaska - Ice covers the bow on the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau, a 378-foot high-endurance cutter homeported in Alameda, Calif., as it patrols in the Bering Sea Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009. 

The Bering Sea is known for harsh weather conditions with seas reaching up to 30 feet, water temperatures below 40 degrees and winds exceeding 70 mph during severe storms.

JUNEAU, Alaska - Ice is frozen on the gun deck and bow of the Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau, a 378-foot high endurance cutter homeported in Alameda, Calif., which is on a two month Bering Sea patrol after it departed its homeport Monday, Nov. 30, 2009.  The Morgenthau was first homeported at Governors Island, New York,  and was active in the Vietnam War conducting underway replenishment, naval gunfire support and patrol duties off the coast of Vietnam until relieved by a 311' cutter in 1971.
