Coast Guard suspends search for crewmember south of Adak Island |

KODIAK, Alaska - The Coast Guard suspended its search at about 3:14 p.m. Wednesday for a crewmember reported to have fallen overboard from the 792-foot Cap Gilbert 450 miles south of Adak Island Tuesday. Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak rescue crews conducted two searches using an HC-130 Hercules aircraft covering approximately 882 nautical miles. The Coast Guard 17th District command center in Juneau was notified of the missing crewman at approximately 8:20 p.m. Tuesday and issued an urgent marine information broadcast requesting the assistance of any vessels in the area. A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft was launched at approximately 10:16 p.m. from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak and a second HC-130 was launched at about 8 a.m. to continue the search. Weather conditions during the second search were 7 to 11 mph winds, three foot seas with 12 foot swells. The missing crewmember's name has not been released pending next of kin notification. |
