Coast Guard medevacs Angoon man

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A 60-year-old male reportedly suffering from chest pains was medevaced from Angoon by a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew Thursday.

Mitchell Howard, an Angoon resident, was medevaced after a call for assistance was received from the local medical clinic by the 17th Coast Guard District command center. Howard was safely picked up by the helicopter rescue crew which then departed Angoon at 1:58 p.m. with an approximate half hour transit to Sitka.

Howard and the helicopter crew arrived in Sitka at 2:21 p.m., where he was transferred to waiting medical personnel for further transport to the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium for further treatment and observation.

“We were able to divert a helicopter crew that was performing a routine homeland security flight near Petersburg,” said Lt. Cmdr. Mia Dutcher, District 17 Command Center watch stander. “After refueling in Petersburg, the helicopter crew was able to safely medevac Mr. Howard to Sitka.”
