JUNEAU, Alaska - Weather once again is impacting operations in Dutch Harbor since Wednesday through today as poor conditions prevented lightering oil from the Selendang Ayu wreck and limited shoreline cleanups. | |
Shoreline crews recovered 152 bags of oily waste from Humpback Bay and 578 bags from Portage Bay Thursday. Crews limited to Humback Bay due to weather Wednesday, collected 280 bags. To date, responders recovered a total of 14,431 bags of oily waste. Also on Wednesday, shoreline cleanup assessment teams found 26 tar balls ranging in diameter from six inches to 26 inches one mile southwest of Dutch Harbor. The crew collected samples and sent them to a laboratory for testing. Boat crews continued water quality sampling in the Akutan area and Unalaska Bay Wednesday. The crews did not detect oil in either area. Crews couldn't perform lightering operations since Wednesday due to the weather. Tuesday's lightering team removed 7,763 gallons of oil, bringing the total volume lightered to date to 41,531 gallons of intermediate fuel oil and 1,309 gallons of diesel for a total of 42,840 gallons. As of Tuesday, the U.S. Forest Service reported the recovery of 645 dead birds and 29 live oiled birds that they captured and sent for rehabilitation. These figures remained constant since their initial report. Weather conditions in Dutch Harbor consist of an air temperature of 39 degrees, 22 mph winds with gusts up to 31 mph and two and a half miles of visibility with overcast skies | |
