KODIAK, Alaska - Salvage crews have removed a total of 15,730 gallons of oil from the Selendang Ayu wreck near Unalaska Island to date. The total amount of recovered product is at approximately 62,368 gallons. Crews are working to remove more today, weather permitting.
Crews removed oil from the port number four tank and the starboard number four tank over the last week and the starboard number four tank is now empty. Salvage crew members welded a coffer dam to the deck above the number four intermediate fuel oil (IFO) tank that protected workers from waves.
Shoreline crews continue clean-up efforts today, working in Skan, Portage and Humpback Bays. A total of 22,601 bags of solid oil waste have been collected. Work is scheduled to continue in these areas through out the weekend.
Boat crews sampled water in Unalaska Bay along the Unalaska - Akutan transit route, Captain's Bay and Broad Bay Thursday with a fine mesh tow to sample for tar balls, patties, mousse and other indicators of fresh oil. None of the tows showed any evidence of oiling.
To date seafood inspections in Dutch Harbor and Akutan processing facilities have found all products free of oil contamination. Inspections continue to during the day and night to check crab and pollock as they arrive at the dock.
Several vessels from the Opilio crab fishery in the Bering Sea have returned to Dutch Harbor to deliver their catch for processing. The remaining fleet is en route to Dutch Harbor and Akutan. The fleet has not reported any signs of oil contamination in their catch.
To date 29 birds have been captured and 10 were cleaned and released. The total number of dead birds is about 600.
Weather conditions in Dutch Harbor today consist of air temperatures ranging from the high 30s to low 40s with mostly cloudy skies. Winds are out of the north and northwest 10 to 15 knots with seas from four to five feet.
Winds are expected to increase to 15 to 40 knots from the southeast Saturday afternoon and evening. Seas will be at three to seven feet. |
