Unified Command Press Release
Weather hampering salvage, clean up crew efforts

JUNEAU, Alaska - Due to inclement weather, small vessels are returning to Dutch Harbor area ports, while larger vessels transit to Anderson Bay for shelter and may be deployed if weather permits. As a result, today’s response activities may include over flights, shoreline assessment/cleanup, vessel lightering, water-quality sampling and wildlife recovery operations.

The shoreline assessment team will survey areas south of McIver Bight. The protection group will continue to assess sites with protective booming and reconfigure the boom to increase effectiveness and remove boom that is ineffective or no longer needed. Oil sampling using net tows is not scheduled for today due to crew change. Snare-packs will be issued to the pollock catcher boats in the area to detect oil contamination.

Shoreline cleanup crews worked in Skan, Portage, and Humpback bays Thursday collecting 1,465 bags of oily waste (24 cubic yards). To date, cleanup crews have collected 33,166 bags (552 cubic yards) of oily solid waste. Also on Thursday oily solid waste was barged out to Seattle, in 31 roll off containers weighing 30, 000 lbs each. The protection group removed boom that is ineffective or no longer needed.

The lightering team removed 12,273 gals of intermediate fuel oil (IFO) from the number four port tank Thursday. The total volume lightered from the vessel to date is 100,516 gallons of IFO/water and 3,094 gallons of diesel/water for a total of 103,610 gallons of IFO/water/diesel, Four ISO tanks containing 5,000 gallons each of lightered fuel were barged out to Seattle Thursday.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) removed 141 oiled and/or scavenged birds from Makushin Bay (136), Cannery Bay (2), Chernofski Bay (2), and Volcano Bay (1) Thursday. To date the USFWS reported that a total of 1,125 dead birds have been recovered.

Two boat crews towed nets in Unalaska Bay in areas where crab boats are waiting to deliver opilio crab and areas near processors Thursday. All tows were reported clean. The vessels will continue tows in the Unalaska Bay area and the same program will be implemented for the Pacific Cod Fishery.

Today's weather in Dutch Harbor consists of mostly cloudy, rain and possible snow, east to northeast winds 25 knots, seas four to six feet and high near 42.
