Coast Guard airlifts ailing Sitka man KODIAK, Alaska - The Coast Guard conducted a medevac of an individual from Sitka to Anchorage Thursday night. The Coast Guard received a request at about 2:45 p.m. from officials at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka requesting a medevac of one of its patients to a facility in Anchorage. The 49-year-old man experienced respiratory distress. The Coast Guard launched a C-130 and crew from Air Station Kodiak to respond. Included in the Coast Guard crew was a flight surgeon from the Coast Guard clinic in Kodiak to care for the patient in flight. The patient's caregiver and brother accompanied him on the plane from Sitka to Anchorage. The Coast Guard used a C-130 rather than a rescue helicopter based on the personnel and equipment accompanying the individual as well as the patient's size. The C-130 landed safely in Anchorage at about 10:30 p.m. and the crew transferred the patient to awaiting emergency medical personnel who took the man was taken to Alaska Native Medical Center. |
