 JUNEAU, Alaska - Weather continues to hamper the Selendang Ayu response effort.

Depending on the weather today's operations will consist of over flights, beach surveys, lightering and wildlife recovery.

 

Lightering crews could not skim oil from the wreck Sunday due to weather and heavy turbulence.  To date 142,692 gallons of intermediate fuel oil (IFO) /diesel/water have been lightered from the wreck.  Although crews lightered no oil, they shipped 19,536 gallons of IFO to Seattle and another 54,845 gallons are awaiting shipment on another barge.

 

All operational vessels remain in Dutch Harbor in standby status. They will resume their missions when weather permits.

 

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service crews recovered one dead oiled/scavenged bird from Chernofski Bay.  To date officials recovered 1,601 birds.

 

Today's weather in Dutch Harbor consists of southeast winds of 25-knots, three-to-four foot seas, rain and an air temperature of 41 degrees.

 

Incident Objectives for the operational period from today through Feb. 14:

 

1. Protect the health and safety of the public and responders.

 

2. Protect sensitive areas to minimize impact to the environment, cultural, subsistence, and economic resources and property.  Evaluate and improve strategies as necessary.

 

3. Finish lightering operations and demobilize equipment.

 

4. Maintain on-water recovery operations IAW Winter Operations Plan.

 

5. Conduct shoreline cleanup as recommended by the Shoreline Clean up

Assessment Team (SCAT).

 

6. Conduct SCAT data compilation in preparation for Spring/Summer operations.

 

7. Provide wildlife recovery and rehabilitation as needed.

 

8. Mobilize/demobilize resources needed for the response.

9. Refine and modify incident command organization suited to expected needs and contingencies.

 

10. Provide thorough liaison with local agencies, communities and fishing industry to keep them informed and address their needs and concerns.

 

11. Provide accurate information to news media and the public.

 

12. Provide proper documentation of the response.

 

13. Scientific support command to evaluate fate and effects of oil.

 

14. Evaluate the presence/extent of oil/sunken oil in specific locations utilizing approved methods and equipment.

 

15. Continue water quality sampling program to support fisheries management decisions; refine methods as appropriate.

 

16. Refine and improve field operations command and control communications system.

 

17. Continue development of shoreline clean up endpoint criteria.

 

18. Determine trigger points for entering into winter operations.
