Coast Guard rescues fishing vessel crew near Kodiak

JUNEAU, Alaska -  At 8:40 a.m. today, Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak search and rescue coordinators received a call from a crewman aboard the fishing vessel Adriana, a 56-foot long liner based in Kodiak.

The Adriana drifted near Akhiok Island, and the crew abandoned ship wearing survival suits.

A Coast Guard Jayhawk rescue helicopter and crew dispatched to assist, with a second helicopter and crew standing by.

A nearby fishing vessel, the Ocean Bay, reported spotting four persons on a nearby beach shortly after the Adriana's crew abandoned ship, but inclement weather and low visibility prevented them from ascertaining what they saw.

After the first Jayhawk and crew transited to the scene, a second helicopter and crew launched as a precaution. The first Jayhawk arrived on scene at 10:24.

The vessel grounded on Aliulik Peninsula on Cape Trinity, across the bay from Akhiok Village.
The Jayhawk crew picked up all four persons and a dog. Aside from mild hypothermia and a minor head wound, Coast Guard rescuers reported no other serious injuries. Upon arrival in Kodiak, rescuers transported the fishers to Kodiak Island Medial Center.

Adriana contacted Air Station Kodiak officials at 2:09 Tuesday morning reporting engine problems and requesting a Marine Assistance Request Broadcast. Adriana's captain cancelled it shortly after. Air Station Kodiak officials placed them on a 30 minute communications schedule until 8 a.m. Tuesday, when the Adriana moored at a cannery in Lazy Bay.
