Photo Release: Coast Guard Cutter Alert makes rare visit to Kodiak

KODIAK, Alaska - The crew of the 210-foot Coast Guard Cutter Alert transits through Chiniak Bay en route Base Support Unit Kodiak to take on fuel, supplies and train prior to a Bering Sea patrol. KODIAK, Alaska - The crew of the 210-foot Coast Guard Cutter Alert transits through Chiniak Bay en route Base Support Unit Kodiak to take on fuel, supplies and train prior to a Bering Sea patrol.

The Astoria, Ore.,-based medium endurance cutter crew is getting a rare taste of Alaska as most Bering Sea patrols are conducted by the larger cutters though 210-foot cutters have served in Alaska in previous decades.

The Alert's crew will attend the Kodiak-based North Pacific Regional Fisheries Training Center before undertaking a patrol in the Bering Sea, a rare occurrence for the 210-foot cutters as most Alaska patrols are conducted by the high endurance fleet or the Alaska-based non-standard Coast Guard Cutters Acushnet and Alex Haley.
