Hickory crew rescues distressed mariner from Kachemak Bay JUNEAU, Alaska - A crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Hickory responded to a report of a person in the water clinging to an overturned sailboat in Kachemak Bay, Wednesday.
The caller, located in Homer, gave the position of the victim as Coal Bay, near the spit. The Coast Guard command center in Juneau issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and contacted a rescue crew on board the Hickory, already responding to the distress with their small boat.
The Hickory’s crew rescued the person in distress, delivering him in good condition to awaiting emergency personnel ashore. The victim refused medical attention and his boat was towed to Homer.
The Hickory is a 225-foot Juniper class buoy tender home ported in Homer. It's missions include aids to navigation, search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection and homeland security. |
