CORRECTION: The Golden Seas is transporting a cargo of Canola seed, not Canola oil.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Coast Guard Cutters Alex Haley and Spar and two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue crews are responding to assist a disabled and drifting 738-foot freighter with 20 crewmembers on board about 70 miles north of Adak on Friday.

The Golden Seas, a Liberian-flagged vessel, is reportedly carrying canola seed, diesel fuel and fuel oil.

The Coast Guard received notification at 4 a.m. Friday that the Golden Seas experienced main engine failure and drifting to the southeast at about 2 mph.

There is a gale warning in the area through Saturday with weather predicted to be winds northwest at 50 mph and 29-foot seas.
